Caring for Yourself During a Viral Outbreak

February 04 2020

With the recent emergence of 2019-nCoV as a global health concern, it’s easy to feel worried about keeping you and your family healthy and safe.

So what does the evidence say? What do health care professionals recommend for us to do to stay healthy? According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the best way to prevent the spread of 2019-nCoV and many other viruses is to:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The most important way for all of us to stay healthy during this outbreak is the same as always.  Practicing good hand hygiene and disinfecting contact points where possible is the best way to avoid breaking the chain of transmission.
